  • Newly Married about to File for AOS

    Hi there,

New to the forum but ive seen many useful threads so ive come to try and document my journey and the help i may need.

So background on our relationship / new marriage:

I'm a white 32 male from the UK... my father is a US Citizen but i never took the opportunity to get a US passport before the age of 21, he lives in Florida... at the age of 28 i did apply for a F1 Preference Family Visa so still on that waiting list... anyways, i have lots of friends in the States ranging from California / New Orleans / Alabama / Iowa / Florida / Georgia so i tend to do a few trips out to the states for catchs up / weddings etc, in February whilst in New Orleans for Mardi Gras i met my future wife down at the bar with my friends where all normally hang out she's 21 and African American... we hit it off really well, both love the same things, we ended up binge watching TV shows together whilst i was in town, i obviously had to come back to the UK in March..

In April i decided that i wanted to take a 3 month career break at work (it was unpaid but allowed as i worked there for 10 years) and spend some time in the states with her/our friends and seeing new things together and shows, i ended up losing my passport at the end of May so had to return to the UK eventually getting an emergency passport home (and a 10hr round trip to Houston) so i left and spent a month back in the UK getting a new passport... i then came back out to renew my road trip and the time off i had from work - all the whilst me and my girlfriend laughed and joked about the situation but we kept up talking over messenger / texting about how we missed eachother... Absence seemed to make the heart grow fonder it seems...

Returned on the 19th June with my new passport, i first went to Atlanta to see my friend and drove down (i like a good road trip!) And eventually reunited with her on the 25th, she started crying and hugging me, she really missed me whilst i was away which was dead sweet, we continue to keep hanging out and doing things / going to concerts, then during a recent trip to the Vans Warped Tour in Houston (which was extremely wet!) She was getting all coy about us and on July 10th whilst watching Paramore, she proposed to me! She went to the floor to pretend to pick something up and i looked down and there was her with a ring, i mean wow.. course i said yes (gender roles be damned hey)

Speaking to friends, with my experience in my job i would have a guaranteed job so im ready to quit my work back in the UK..

So i'm meant to be leaving the country originally in September as per VWP in my passport, we were reading about AOS and being able to stay in the country together instead of me returning home to the UK and waiting what seems the quiet lengthy wait of being reunited.. so would it be wise to marry soon and have a short engagement and then start to file?

How much of a problem would it be for what would be newly weds such as ourselves to prove a bona fida relationship / marriage? I can't be put on a lease so we cant live together yet as i'm not a US Resident and im currently staying at what i could best describe as my "American Father" house (he's looked after me like a son since i first met him years ago) and she lives on her own in her own Apartment... we have pics of our things together we done and texts / messenger convos... is this sufficient or will i need way more?

When would it be best to file for AOS etc? Any help greatly appreciated
