In my opinion marrying someone should be purely based on the love connection and personal circumstances between both. It should not surround an immigration benefit. Nonetheless, in my opinion being on an F1 visa is legal and gives you some waiting time. However, I would marry as soon as I can so that I can begin to collect documents and commitment to substantiate bonafide marriage. Thereafter at about the 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 margin of marriage I would apply for I130, I485, I765, I864 etc so that by the time the paperwork is processed at the Chicago lockbox or field office I could benefit from a 10 year GC. Otherwise marry and submit documents with ALL required documents before 9/11. But ensure your relationship is legit.

    All the best.

I did the same thing in 2016. My husband visited my home country with me and he proposed to me there. We got back on 01/10/16 and got married on 01/18/2016. Note that I was still under F-1 legally at that time.

And only do that if it's real love, don't rush because of the paperworks. Your marriage life matters, not the green card.
