  • I485 Change of Address/Interview

I've kind of been lurking in the forum reading other people cases and finding similarity with our to keep me sane. It's kind of hard, and since I'm a worry worth... I always come up with negative scenerio in my head.

Just a little bit of background with us. My husband and I met in college and started dating in 2010... life happened, so it didn't work out, but we started dating again in early 2014. Moved in together in 2015. Get married last year in February 2017. He moved to Louisiana right after we married due to his job relocation. We filed I-485 and I-130 together in July 2017. Below is kind of our timeline:

    July 5, 2017 - Filed I-485, I-130, I-131, I-765
    August 3, 2017 - Biometrics
    August 14, 2017 - Ready for interview
    November 22, 2017 - Received EAD/AP Card
March 20, 2018 - Filed change of address from New Orleans to Kansas City
    August 4, 2018 - Filed renewal I-131/I-765
    August 14, 2018 - Received interview notification
August 21, 2018 - Received interview letter in old address to interview at New Orleans
    August 24, 2018 - Received biometric for I-765 renewal
August 27, 2018 - Called USCIS in New Orleans to make sure we can go to the interview since we submitted change of address back in March 2018. They put in a ticket, but recommend not going to the interview because the case is already transferred.

I live in Missouri, and my husband live in Louisiana. I've already booked the flight to New Orleans for the interview, so even if there's no interview, I'll still go there. I've already make changes to my flight once already due to prior commitment and too costly to change it again.

My husband is still working in Louisiana, so it's not difficult for us to go the interview. We changed the address in March since we bought a house in Kansas City, and we aren't sure how long he'll be working in Louisiana. Since he's coming home every other weekend, so it made sense to put Kansas City as a permanent address to receive mail.

And now, I'm kind of regretting changing the address. I know it's not within my control anymore, but I'm not sure what to do. I hope the case doesn't get into a black hole or something. Any suggestion would be nice...

Hi there, we kinda had the same thing happened, we filed in Minneapolis last August, and on April we moved to Tampa and I filed the change of address. I even called them and made sure that they had processed it and the agent told me that my interview was scheduled in Tampa... Oh, surprise!!! It was scheduled in Minneapolis. I asked around a couple of lawyers and somebody from my home country that does all this for a living and was given the same answer, "DO NOT MISS THE INTERVIEW", if you do, they can decide that your case was abandoned and you would have to re file. Go, bring everything on the change of address, every notification you received, whether electronic or via mail and if they reschedule, then so be it, but you're doing everything they've asked you to do. Bring a copy of your mortgage, specially if both of you are on it, and everything that will document your marriage.
Don't regret updating your address, it had to be done and again, you were following instructions.

Everything is going to be alright, it will work out and you'll be ok. I know that it's stressing and your mind plays tricks on you, I did to imagined all the worst case scenarios and then some, and yes, you will be nervous, it's normal, we're human and it's our lives at stake BUT you have nothing to worry about, bring everything and remember that you got married for the right reasons, and bottom line, that's what they want to see. How comfortable you are around each other and the love between the two of you and that's something that cannot be acted up (I can't think of the word I want to use).
Go for it and the best of luck for you!

      Thanks SandiumH.

We called to confirmed. The officer submitted a ticket regarding the matter. They responded quite fast from the ticket saying that it's no longer in their jurisdiction so the files will be transferred to the new location, and we'll hear back from the new office within 90 days.

All we can do now is wait.

I read your posts from your Minneapolis thread. I'm glad you're able to go to your interview. I hope things will turn out well for you.

My husband still think that since I'm going to be over in Louisiana, so if we don't hear back from Kansas City by then, we should still swing by. The worst they can do is turn us away, better than getting a "denied" due to not going.

That's great! I guess it's all about doing what they tell us to do. And yes, if you don't hear from them before the interview date, swing by, who knows and they do the interview still? like you said, worst case scenario, they cancel and transfer you to your field office. you've got nothing to lose.

Hope everything works out great for you and keep us posted !!!

Just want to update on our situations.

We called and talk to an officer to reschedule the interview and received an email that the case has been transferred and it?a no longer in their jurisdiction. The status online was still ?interview scheduled? and has not been canceled. The officer told us not to go to the interview.

My husband and I decided to go anyway since we never received the cancellation status, and judging from how the change of address was processed, we didn?t even trust the email we received that said our case has been transferred. Worst case, they will tell us to go home and wait again.

We went to the interview today. The case is still not transferred and they did our interview. Case is approved and card is in production. Yay!

Anyone with the same situation... don?t skip the interview unless you received the cancellation status updated on the website. SR and email of SR verifying that it has been processed and completed didn?t mean anything.
