As far as I know for RFIE your process freezes up until USCIS receives the necessary, requested document as the missing document.

It might be worthy to call the call center and connect to Tier-2 officer to get the insight of it. I could be something related to birth certificates, or marriage certificate, divorce documents if any. This is just my guessing but something very essential that not allowing USCIS proceed on your file. If you have copy of your files maybe go through them to find out if you missed out anything. I know waiting is REALLY difficult but hang in there! Sooner or later (hopefully sooner) you will get the EAD.

I must say, getting this update makes me feel a little bit at ease knowing that at least someone has my documents. I will wait for document to come in the mail. I sent Married Certificate, no divorce documents because neither one of us were ever married.

Did you submit your I-693 medical form with your application? My account said Request for Initial Evidence and it turned out to just be the I-693 courtesy letter (reminding me that I needed to submit that form at a later time.) If you haven't submitted the I-693 there is a chance it is that, and there would be no delay to your case.

Hi, I am in similar situation. After more than 5 months I got a notification that RFIE for I-485 has been sent on September 5th. It has been 13 days and so far I haven't received the mail, so I have no idea what they want.

I have sent all necessary information, also submitted I-693 - medical files with it. My EAP/AP is 179 days old and they are nearing my PD date, so it is really nerve wrecking knowing I should be receiving work permit, but may not as the RFIE is probably holding it back

For more info, please see my timeline in signature, or ask me.

I submitted my I693 after I submitted my other documents. It however says it was delivered safely since June ... In that even if it?s really is my missing medical I can request a copy from doctor and resubmit is PRONTO

I received other mail from then in 5 and 3 days, so I am nervous why suddenly it is taking 13+ days. But in the update on USCIS website they said that if I don't receive the request by October 5th I should request a copy, so I thought that the norm is 30 days to receive the mail.

But you are right, I should probably call and ask if for some reason the mail isn't already on the way back to USCIS, anything could have happen...

The wording on the USCIS site:
                    September 5, 2018

Request for Initial Evidence Was Mailed
On September 05, 2018, we mailed a request for initial evidence for your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, Receipt Number MSC... The request for evidence explains what we need from you. We will not take action on your case until we receive the evidence or the deadline to submit it expires. Please follow the instructions in the request for evidence. If you do not receive your request for evidence by October 05, 2018, please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request a copy of the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

Thanks for sharing . Why don?t you call ? Please call because there is a deadline to respond to your RFIE . If I don?t get mine in the mail by Friday I am calling Monday morning first thing .

                          You should call them ASAP.
So I called USCIS, after about 20 minutes on hold I got connected to level 1 tier. He was really nice and trying to be helpful, but only provided me with the info I already knew and the info from websites where the updates for my cases are. He told me that my EAD/AP won't be influenced by the RFIE for I-485.
He also told me that according to dates and so on, I should receive EAD/AP in a month. And the RFIE hopefully this week.
He said unfortunately there is nothing that can be done before October 5th. After this date I can submit eticket for not receiving the RFIE, they will process it and send it again. And that also he has no way to know what is in the RFIE.

He said more info can be provided by level 2 tier officer. After two minutes I was connected to level 2 tier officer. I asked if he can provide me with info regarding RFIE, he said no, I will find out in letter. He also asked me for my address to check if the letter went to me and confirmed it was sent to my address. And that I should receive it soon and if no, fill out eticket after October 5th. So really not helpful. At that moment my connection dropped and I don't know if they dropped it or if it was my really useless phone provider as it happens several times a day.... Anyway, he also told me that they don't register any mail that was returned to them from my address, so the RFIE must be still in some USPS never ending spiral somewhere, hopefully on its way to me...

Wow ! I called USCIS as well but was just told to make an infopass appointment. I am not sure what?s an infopass appointment and not sure if I should even bother. The customer service rep suggested infopass when I asked her if she could transfer me to someone who can help me understand what my RFIE is so that I can speed up my process. She the stated that unfortunately that cannot be discussed over the phone ! I will keep you in loop because if infopass is suggested by our fellow filers I am going to go for it!
I hope you got a little closer. The good thing is, we?re near time to request service for EAD.
Call USPS as well to see if they can help you locate the document. They probably can help !

It's simple, though. What is your file missing? Initial required evidence is all listed on the instructions for all forms. At this point, it may be easiest to make an Infopass appointment. I believe ISOs may be able to "open" the letter in the system.
                              Here you go

Google is your best friend. If you google "Infopass", the very first result is that link I just gave you.
