We arrived at the Downtown LA office about an hour before our interview at 11:30 am. When we got there the line was around the building. Luckily, after several minutes of waiting in the line that wasn't moving, a security guard came down to each person to see what they were there for. If you had an interview, he would direct you to go into a different line. They took us to a different entrance on the side of the building. By this time, our attorney was already up in the waiting room and had let the officer checking people in that we were in still in the security line. We got to the waiting room about 15 min after our appointment time, and we waited another 15- 20 minutes for our IO to call us in.

Our IO was very polite. When he came out, he introduced himself and let us know that we were his very first interview, EVER. So he also had his supervisor with him who would be observing. He let us know that he had previously worked in the asylum division. Since he was new to this office, not all of his technology was yet set up. So he instructed us to go into his colleague's office to take my husband's picture and fingerprints. After this, we went into his office where we were asked to take the oath.

After we sat down, he again explained that he was new so his supervisor would be observing. He seemed to be a little nervous as this was his first time conducting this kind of interview. He was VERY THOROUGH. First he started with the I-130 application, and directed all the questions to me. He then moved to the I-485 and asked my husband ALL of the the yes/no questions. He made notes/corrections in red as he was going through it. In our initial application, we had submitted Supplement A to Form I-485 to be able to adjust status under Section 245(i). My husband is a derivative beneficiary from a labor petition that was filed on behalf of my father-in-law in 2001. Many new officers have not seen this kind of case so many years later, so we were sent an RFIE to supply more information. The IO still had questions regarding this filing, so our lawyer had to interject and explain a few things. The IO indicated that they might have to go back and look for my father-in-law's file if they needed any more clarification.

He then proceeded to ask questions about our relationship - what we like to do for fun, who was at our wedding, do we know each other's family, etc. He saw that I had brought with me additional documents and asked if I wanted to add them to the file. He took the whole packet - had a TOC on top and tabs for each section held together by a binder clip. I can post a copy of my TOC if needed, but I basically used several examples that were previously posted in the boards.

The only issue that we didn't expect was that the medical exam was very deficiently filled out by the civil surgeon, in particular the vaccination section and the TB test section. As for the TB test, my husband has tested positive and has previously taken medication for it. Now, doctors go straight to the chest x-ray to clear him for TB. This is what the civil surgeon did, but apparently it was the wrong test. There are two test that should be attempted first, before going to the chest x-ray, and the civil surgeon did not do either. The IO let us know that he would be issuing an RFE for this. He also let us know that he would usually be able to generate the RFE right there, but again since he was new, he didn't have access to all forms on his system yet. He asked us to wait outside while he used a colleague's computer to generate the "held for review" letter. Before we walked out, he asked to make copies of our ID's.

We waited in the waiting room for another 10-15 minutes. He came out with the letter, and let us know that we should expect the RFE for an updated medical exam.

All in all, the interview took about 2 hours mainly because the IO was new and very thorough reading through every question on the I-130 and I-485.

The next day we got notice that an RFE was mailed, and the day after that the notice that the I-130 was approved.

It took us several trips to the civil surgeon to get a corrected medical exam. Our lawyer sent it off last Friday, so now we wait! Good luck to you!

Wow im so happy your journey is done! Getting a little anxious as my interview will be in a few weeks. Good to hear story like yours.

Hopefully my interview wouldnt take that long.

I am just contemplating if i should bring a lawyer with me.

                              Hi all,
i had my interview yesterday at the downtown LA. It was approved on the spot but I want to share my experience. We parked at the Judge John Aiso Parking Lot, we were there for 2 hours and it was only $5. My interview was schedule for 9:00 but we arrived at 8:30.....and hour later and we were not called..we asked why we were not being called as we saw that the people after us had left already....the person at the window said to ask again a hour and 15 min after my schedule appointment. Exactly at a hour and 15 min, I asked again and a min after we were called. I did see that the agent that was separating couples was our agent....I got really nervous. When we asked us when we got married, I said the wrong year and she looked at me like she didn’t believe anything. She asked us specific questions. Asked me where my husband lived when I met him and she asked my husband the name of the streets where I have lived.....my husband didn’t remember the name of the streets but told her that he can point it out on google maps where it is since he knew how to get there but didn’t know the name of the streets. She asked my husband if he Knew what he had signed.....he responded with “that I have to provide for her”.....she was like “correct but it is more that she won’t be able to get funds from the government and you will be responsible for her for 10 years” after that, she said I will get the card in the mail. We got lucky that she didn’t separate us. I prepared a folder with copies of new items such as tax returns, new bills, trip tickets, new income verification, along with originals birth certificate, marriage certificate. She only asked us for birth certificates, 2018 joint tax return and income verification, I gave her my husband’s and my income verification with last two pay stubs.
