from personal experience, the certificate is the same at a courthouse vs a non courthouse wedding. for anyone wondering, the evidence pf a bonafide marriage trumps the certificate. the only thing that would make me recommend a non courthouse marriage over a courthouse wedding is if you have in laws like mine who are going to piss and moan because they didn't approve of the type of wedding. and even then it's your decision and your in laws can go stick their heads in the sand of the Sahara in the middle of summer.
This is strictly an opinion and should not be misconstrued as legal advice. The use of this information is strictly at your own risk.

We got "court married" couple months ago and having a ceremony next year and yes the IO asked my wife about it which she responded "This way it was less stressful and one thing less to worry about our wedding day". Also one of her friends (American couple) did the same thing so she gave them as an example.

For us the slightly off part was that we didn't have our parents as witnesses, we had someone we know and a random person at the courthouse. However like the others said, if you show that you have a legit marriage it won't be an issue. Just be prepared for that question because before the interview I asked my wife how would she answer she said "oh to speed up the immigration proceedings". I facepalmed really hard and told her not to say that

This is GREAT advice! You should still be prepared to answer such questions and NEVER - under any circumstances - use the word Green Card in that sentence. I vividly recall that the judge who married us asked us if we were getting married because my husband's status was ending. I guess he saw the passport and I said that he had just graduated, etc. Anyway, I said "He did just graduate but he has 24 months of STEM OPT. We just can't wait to be together and for our union to be legal"

So you never know - I guess we could have been like this couple. https://www.newsweek.com/judge-calls...ng-days-895116

Nice stories, everyone! I hope all of you (us) have happy marriages and wonderful lives. As I said, we married at the courthouse too. My husband’s parents were our witnesses and the only people who attended. In June 2019 we have the party scheduled in Europe with 420 guests! Woohoo! Regardless, for us, the certificate is just a piece or paper, it does not define or impact our relationship in any way. Nothing has changed between since we signed the paper (just my last name, haha).

I saw that a lot of people met online. Well, I guess we are more old school. We met in person, neither of us used social media or dating apps. We still do not have any social media accounts. We met in a a coffee shop, I was doing homework when I saw this incredibly handsome guy in a suit walking in. My luck was that no table was available so he walked up to me and asked if he could sit at my table. We started talking and probably sat there for 4 hours. We began dating afterwards and it felt like a knew him for ages. We moved in together in August 2017.

I am thankful and grateful for having this man as my husband. I swear I am not that cheesy in real life, but I allow myself to be now since this is all anonymous. I have zero concerns about the interview because I know our relationship is 300% genuine and we have plenty of proof. Thanks everyone for sharing and Merry Christmas!

                  Totally agree.

I could be wrong. I think the reason it may sounds "cheesy" is because we are emotional when we talk about our stories. We sounds passionate. It is a sweet stories with tons of details. The listener was not involved in the story and may feel "overwhemed" with our emotions. But If I am the IO,I think this is what I am looking for in the interview.

Chipping in too because I’m all about love stories...

My husband and I met on Bumble! We live in NYC so meeting IRL is the new weird hahaha I am honestly so thankful for these apps as I am positive that I wouldn’t have met this wonderful man, my soulmate, otherwise.

We met in June 2016, engaged in June 2018, legally married at the courthouse in August 2018 and big traditional wedding in France in July 2019.

It’s nice to hear about your stories. I feel like this forum is so anonymous that it feels good to add a little “lightness”!

Yes, of course! You can't make up stories like these. Immigration Officers want to hear them, and hopefully, you support them with a nice, solid paper trail. *Of note: I updated the tags to "AOS how did you meet" and "AOS sweet love stories".

We only had court marriage and we plan to have our dream wedding in the near future, either in my country or in the U.S or both. We met on Her app, from being friends, to close friends, dating and now we're wives. I'm thankful to be with her, to call this amazing woman as "my wife". The sad part was we didn't have our parents as our witnesses, only friends. The IO asked about it and we answered exactly how it was, "our parents are old-fashioned and dont believe in same-sex marriage". But yes, love wins. I love my wife and we believe our relationship is genuine !!!
