  • Address History - Too many addresses on the past 5 years

    Hi guys,

I have a question regarding the address history section of the form I-485 that I hope you can help me with.

Because of the online nature of my work, I basically spent the last 5 years travelling. I would come visit my now wife in the US with a tourist visa and stay here 4-6 months and the rest of the year I'd be travelling, always with a tourist visa and never staying more than 4-5 months at the same place. When in the US, we would stay in hotels, airbnb's, friend's house etc... I have never had anything under my name.

I have an address where my mom lives back in my home country that I'd come visit and that I would call my permanent address, but I am still unsure as how to fill out my address history. I obviously can't recall every place I've been for the past 5 years. How do you guys suggest I procede?

    Thanks a lot!

I would list your parents' address as your permanent address in your home country. I imagine that every time you entered the US, you gave CBP officers your girlfriend's address. So I would list that as your address for all your visits IF that was of course, your main address. Any other addresses - hotels, airbnb, hostels - would just clutter your applications and background checks. That's my humble 2-cent non-legal opinion

      Hi all!

@PMUScitizenFilingforspouse, thanks for your input! I'd love to hear your opinion based on what I said below:

After posting, I did some more research and the information I found the most accurate so far was this:

"I should only list permanent residences. Since I came to the US on a tourist visa, I shouldn't list any address in the country, since I was not allowed to be living here. The same apply for every other country I visited, since it was all done on a tourist visa."

So I'm thinking of only listing my current US address (where I'm currently living with my spouse) and my previous home country addresses. At the Additional Information section, I'm thinking of including a text explaining more or less this:

"Because of the online nature of my work, I chose to spent a lot of time traveling abroad. While traveling, I was always on a tourist visa and I never had a place registered under my name. So the addresses listed on "Part3 Address History" represent only my permanent address at the time and not necessarily where I was at the moment."

      So, for example, I'd have:

      ADDRESS 1
      New York, NY
      From 11/20/2018
      Until Present

      ADDRESS 2
      Brazil
      From 01/01/2015
      Until 11/20/2018

So despite the fact that I got in the US on a tourist visa 4 months ago, I still have my permanent address for that time in Brazil (since I was just visitor). It only changed when I signed the lease with my spouse 1 month ago.

What do you guys think? Does that sound reasonable?

      Thanks!

All of that sounds reasonable. You may not even need to include the explanation. But that's your call. I can see how listing addresses in the US may also convolute it all, since you were not actually RESIDING in the US permanently. It makes sense.
