  • Can government shut down affects uscis?

Good day/! Now that there is a government shutdown, will it affect USCIS applications? I sent my aos 3 weeks ago and they haven't cashed my checks yet.

Most USCIS operations are unaffected, including processing of most types of applications.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

From what I understand, USCIS is not affected by the shutdown because they are self-funded through the large fees we pay. However, the lockbox facility that receives the applications initially is a private government contractor, and they are affected by the shutdown. If you submitted to a lockbox address, your applications and checks may be sitting there waiting to be opened.

Effectively this would lead to a freeze if shutdown lasts long enough and USCIS own funds are depleted, so I hope they have a nice safety cushion.
