  • Current Legal Name vs Other Names Used

In Mexico, I have two last names. For example, say my full legal name is John Doe Smith, where Doe is my father's last name, and Smith is my mother's maiden name. Informally, most people know me as John Doe.

On I-485, where it asks for my full legal name, I know to put John Doe Smith, as this is what is shown on my birth certificate, passport, visa, etc. My question is, on the same form where it asks for "Other Names You Have Used Since Birth", should I put John Doe?

I believe you only need to put "other names" that you have legally used. For Example. My wife is changing her last name to my name, so in her case she has two last names just like you.

So in her home country, her legal name let's say is, Mary Jane Smith. After she married me she wanted to change her name to my last name so legally right now in this country it's Mary Rock.

So in our forms she put Mary Rock as the current name legal name and in other names she put in Mary Jane Smith.

I don't think so because it is basically the same. You should put if they are different, for example for women that used a married name.

My wife name, for example, Jane Doe Gomez (birth certificate) she used Jane Doe De Martinez for passports and visas for many years (married name as they used to do in Mexico), but now the new Mexican passport is back to Jane Doe Gomez and they show "spouse last name: Martinez"
