  • EAD & Driver License

    Hi All,

Just got my EAD and I want to get my driver license, I am somehow sure that the expiration date of the driver license will be attached to the EAD expiration date (1 year).
I'm wondering what will be the process renewing the driver license.
If I won't have the GC by then and I will apply for renewing my EAD and will get the new EAD combo card on time - the DMV will just renew the driver license for another year? Same if i will get the GC, they will renew for 2 years (if the GC is conditional)?

I want to avoid doing the written and road test more than once.

Does anyone have experience with this scenario?

    Thanks!

I think the DL requirements are different in each State.

I guess if they give you a 1 year DL and then you renew it with new EAD/AP you don't have to do the written/road tests again.

They gave my wife a one year one. when it expires we go get it renewed with the green card expiration date. then when we remove conditions ?. we will see what happens
I don't think you would have to do the testing all over, they wouldn't be expired all that long and they will have your records. Like was said its different in all 50 states but this has been my experience.

I actually asked my lawyer this same question. He said that I should try using the I485 application because they sometimes accept it and give you 10 year license based on the application. He said to also bring the EAD in case they dont accept the I485 but in this case it will indeed be a one year license.

I dont think you would need to redo the drive or theory test and should be able to renew using the green card once you have it.
