I-485 for parents

I have applied I-485 for my parents and they are done with fingerprinting. But we are waiting for the next step in the process and their stay in US is expiring too according to their passport. Do they have to leave the country and go back India or there is a process for them to get extension. Can they stay here in US as their green card application is under process?
