Personal experience. As a student, my other international student friends and myself had to use our I-20s and F1 Visa to show that we maintained a lawful residence in the country. Once, I graduated and transferred over to OPT, I could not use my NOA (receipts) as a means to show lawful residence. Therefore, I gathered that the receipts only show that its holder is being processed for said lawful residence. In our friends case, he will have to wait until his EAD is in to show that he still has lawful residence in the USA. Also, please refer to the link: https://www.dps.texas.gov/driverlice...forlicense.htm I am currently awaiting my EAD too so that I can have my license renewed.
UPDATE: You can renew your license: https://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLice...ulPresence.pdf Just show you I-797 for pending I-485. I am sorry- I will verify with my DMV soon. Good luck.March 2019 Filer B2, 131/131A, 765, 485, 693, 864, G1145 - Houston

Though this website has never updated for me as of yet. I've got my I-140 as well as my I-485 in there, and both still say 'received' and nothing else, while my I-140 has been approved back in January. My case does update on egov.uscis.gov but there you can't get SMS updates, correct?Employment-based AOS (I-140, I-485, I-131, I-765)
