I-485 querry and EAD

I got my I-140 approved in Schedule A Group II (SAG-II) category. Now my application has gone for I-485 and EAD for myself and spouse. I was told that this category is open for I-485 as oppsed to EB-1. In how many days, my I-485 will come. My H1 will expire in Dec this year, Dec 2006. Do I need to have my H1 also after Dec 2006 even if I get my EAD soon. I need to stay with my current employer at UC Davis till Feb 2007. Can I join some other Univ or Medical insitute with similar kind of job as current in research with EAD only and without new H1. With out H1 beginning Jan 2007, what will be my visa status?
Can anybody help me for giving suggestion.
