485 Pending dependents H4 expiring Plz help

I have H1 and wife and children (under 12 years) have H4 visas expiring at the end of May this year. All the family members are Candian citizens. I sent our I-485 a week ago and thought I will ask my employer to apply for the renewal of our H visas. The employer suggested to apply for EAD instead. I can apply for myself and for the wife for EAD, but the kids are not even eligible for employment. Will the kids become out of status? How do I resolve this issue? I have gone through dozens of USCIS webpages, but no luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As long as you have your I-485 in you are not out of status, your status will just change from H1 to "pending", which is a valid status and apply for EAD as soon as you can

Thanks for the reply. We received the I-797C Notice of Action for our I485 today. It clearly states that " this receipt does not constitute evidence that your application remains pending with USCIS". The question really is I can apply for EAD for the wife and for myself. What do I need to apply for for the kids. I will truly appreciate any USCIS links that are relevant to this questions.
