Lost 485

This afternoon my lawyer informed that USCIS might have misplaced my application for I-485 and it may be better to refile it. I certainly am going to file for it again at the earliest but anyone has been through this? My 485 was filed in June'07 and sadly it took this much time to arrive at this conclusion and prepare for the next step. Well I think there was little that we could have done. Can anyone suggest if there is a way to track the lost application in a huge pile?
