Alien Registration Number - when get it?

When do I get my Alien Registration number after filing for AOS? Do I get assigned one once I file (with the receipt) or do I get it once the process is done and I get granted permanent residency? Need to know since Universities are requesting it. I did not have it before since I came here on Student Visa. Thanks!

Yes, you will have A# once process of your GC petition start.

Actually, your Alien Number is given to you during the AOS process, when you file I-485, you will find your A# in the I-485 receipt.
