  • Outside of the U.S. for 6 months.

    Hi all.
I am a permanent resident (Green card) of the U.S. and I plan to go to my native country for 6 months (I will not exceed 6 months). I've reed everything about the permanent resident and I realize I should not have any problems when I reenter to the U.S.
However, I've heard about some complains of other green card holders who have visited their native countries for 4-5 months, that they are being asked detailed questions why they have been outside of the U.S. for so long?

My question is simple: Why the immigrant officer at the airport ask all those questions and do they have the right to forbid you to reenter US after being outside for up to 6 months?

    Thanks.

They have every right to ask, it is their job to ensure the security of the people of the USA. You could be engaged in illegal activities in your home country that would revoke your permanent residency.

ps: take note, that a 6 month absence from the USA is very likely to break your "continuous residency" for naturalization purposes.

      yes they'll ask you

Being gone even for more than a month will attract some suspicion to a careful Immigration Officer. Yes he has every right to ask. To all those travelling with a green card, make sure to limit your trips outside of the US and don't stay too long outside the US.
