  • I-797, SSN and Driver's License

I applied for a I-485 early this year and got my I-797c Notice of Action in the mail May 13th. So I went to the DMV thinking that they would not issue me a driver's license, but surprisingly they did! I was wondering if I could go to the Social Security Administration and apply for a SSN (a restricted one, not for work) using the I-797 and the license? I need a SSN to apply for student financial aid by June 31st :[ And approximately how long would it take to get the finger printing notice in the mail?

What is your current status? SSA will issue one only if you have a EAD unless you are allowed to work on your current status.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

      i-797 to replace my ssn

I lost my ss card. I still waiting for EAD too.
Do you know if I need to have EAD for the replacement or can I use I-797 ?

Am I allowed to work right now ? or I have to wait util my EAD arrived, they said it will take another 30 days for the EAD. I can't wait any longer, I am going broke!

You can not work without EAD APPROVED IN YOUR HAND.
