I-485 Filing when in India

My husband's employer is filing I-485 for him in two weeks. But, I am already in India for my sister's wedding in october. Can they add me also in I-485 when I am in India? How do US immigration know whether I am outside the country? If not, when I come back in November, is there a way to get added to my husband's I-485 application? I have a valid H4-visa with which I can re-enter US.

I am thinking your husband has to be approved first for a Green card, then you can ride on him to get your own Green Card.
