How long can anybody be Jobless on EAD?

Recently my friend lost his job after 140 days after applying for I485. He is currently jobless and finding it hard to find a job because of the current downtime.

My question is how long one can stay jobless on EAD? What are the legal implications of being jobless for a long period say 3 to 4 months.

While on 485 pending his status is preserved until INS adjudicates. While on EAD one can be jobless until 485 approval. But if one gets a employment based RFE (note you have to respond within 15 days) or a local transfer-interview then one needs to show documentary proof of job.
After GC approval INS does not check whether you are working or not, but that issue might come up during GC renewal or citizenship application.
