Can I apply for passport renewal while i485 going on?

Hello friends/experts,
I have applied for i485 in Aug 2001.
My passport is expiring in Jun 2002.
Can i apply to Consulate of India for Passport renewal?
If yes then what is the process?
Do I need to inform INS using any forms about the new passport?
How will my green card process, be impacted?
My RD is 8/9/01, ND 9/19/01 and FP is to be done on 4/1/02.
Any help is most appreciated.
