  • Remove spouse name - completely!

I am Indian, resident in Sri Lanka, divorced & re-married to a Canadian.

I applied here in Sri Lanka to have my previous spouse's name removed from my passport, due to strange looks when travelling along with my (foreigner) husband.

I naturally assumed that they would issue a new passport, as it is not possible to remove a spouse's name any other way, as it is clearly listed both in the front and back inside covers.

I was amazed to see just a simple notation, written by hand, that the "spouse name has been removed by this office", and that too, it is not near the back of the passport, where most notations are made, it is on a simple visa page, right in the middle of the passport, and quite difficult to find easily!

It certainly does not solve the problem of funny looks at immigration counters, so I requested them to issue a new passport, but they said that as I have "7" empty pages still, they can not do so!

Is this correct? Does India force it's citizens to endure humiliation endlessly due to re-marriage, or is there a remedy to this problem?

    Thanks for the help!

You can apply for a new passport saying your looks, face, hair have significantly changed in the picture on it. They will issue a new one.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
