  • Can a friend be a Substitute Sponsor?

I just downloaded the instructions for the I-864. From what I understand regarding the instructions, a "substitute sponsor" can only be a family member. Yet, I've read on numerous websites that individuals who are not family members can "co-sponor" the immigrant. Also, an immigration lawyer informed us that a friend can co-sponsor my wife. In addition, a friend co-sponsored a Mexican immigrant who was not part of his family.

    Was this information wrong?

My wife and I have a good friend who is willing to co-sponsor my wife with me, but now I'm afraid (after reading the instructions on the I-864) that only a family member is eligible.

Is it permissable for a non-family member to co-sponsor, or be a substitute sponsor? If so, do I need another form, or if I'm using the I-864, how do I properly fill out the form?

    Thanks.
