  • lost divorce decree

My husband (US citizen) and I went to our immigration interview, during which we answered all but one question fine. The problematic one was about the divorce decree of my husband's 1st marriage, which ended in the early 1980's. Since it was so long ago, he couldn't remember exactly where it ended, and he doesn't have a copy of the decree. We've pretty much asked all likely courts and all told us no divorce record in my husband's name was found. the immigration officer gave us a request for information sheet, with June 15 being the deadline. She said even an affidavit from my husband's ex-wife would not do any good. She further said if we end up not being able to locate the divorce decree, my husband would have to re-file for the divorce, and we would have to re-marry and re-submit my green card application.

It seems odd because both my husband and his ex-wife had a second marriage after their failed marriage. In addition, I already received the approval for my travel document and work authorization applications.

Given that we've pretty much exhausted all possible places where the divorce decree might have been, I'm not very hopeful that we will find it. I think there is a big chance that the record might have been lost. In any event, any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
