Travel - I-94 taken by the IO during Initial interview

Hi

My I-94 has been taken by IO during Initial interview and given a letter that I need to wait until a visa# is available. (My I-485 is pending approval.)

I am planning to travel now and would like to know if I can travel without I-94? Anyone has any travel experience to share would be greatly appreciated.
