  • renew passport before or after biometrics appointment

    Facts:
My passport will expire on May 11, and it takes at least 6 weeks to renew (no expedited service).

I have a biometrics appointment on Feb 26.

    Questions:
Should I wait until I am done with my biometrics before renewing my passport OR should I just go ahead with the passport renewal asap?

If I renew my passport, the embassy will put holes on it (or cut the cover) to signify that this would not be valid anymore. Will this be a problem with the USCIS when I present them an "expired" passport?

When are the other instances when I will need a VALID passport during the whole AOS/GC application?

    Many thanks for the advice.

Go ahead with your Biometrics coz you have enough time to renew the passport. Dont tell the officer that it takes 6 weeks to renew, just finish your Biometrics and if they ask that your passport is near to expiry than just reply "Yes, I am aware and immediately I am going to renew it" NO TIME AND DATE DETAILS. Just simple answer and mum.

      passport

      Thanks!

Would you (or anybody) know what other instances will a valid passport be needed during the AOS processing period? And will it only be used for identification purposes? (no stamps or anything)

just in case somebody else is in the same boat. i went to a local USCIS field office, and the io told me that expired passports are fine for the biometrics.
