We contacted our senator. His office asked us to supply all the documentation along with a cover letter explaining the situation. The senator's office then forwarded that material to USCIS and they, in turn, responded to both the senator and to us. The whole process took about 3 weeks from the time we submitted the material to the senator's office.

Thanks for your response. To clarify, did you contact a United States senator from your state or a State Senate senator? How long did it take to hear back from them?

Yes they will contact USCIS on your behalf, but before that make sure you are ready with all the proofs and cover letter stating clearly on what reason you want to expedite your EAD. Once you contact your senator/congressman, they will ask you to email them you all the documentation, which they will forward to USCIS on your behalf.

This was a US senator. State senators are of no help with federal matters. The office usually responds within 1-2 business days. Using a congressman would be the same. Choose whomever you think has the better run office. And as VF123 said above, be very clear that your documentation specifically states and is in support of one of the seven expedite criteria established by USCIS.
