  • New EAD and old Social Security Card?

    Good Morning Everyone,

I had a quick question and was hoping that anyone would help, especially those who had similar experiences.
So I had a Social Security Number/ Card from a previous entry in the US when I was allowed to work, I haven't worked or been able to work in the US ever since but I still have that Social Security Card.

I'm expecting/waiting to receive the EAD hopefully soon, and was just wondering whether I'll need to get a new social security card once I get the EAD or not? I read online that I'll need to get a new one in the case of any name changes, but just wanted to make sure that otherwise the old card will be okay.

I received that first SSN around September 2017, on a previous entry and it says on it "valid for work only with DHS authorization".

Thanks a lot and good luck to everyone!
06/10/2019 - Application delivered to USCIS Chicago Office
06/18/2019 - Checks Cashed (no txt or email!)
06/20/2019 - 4 NOAs Letters received in mail
06/28/2019 - Received Biometrics Appointment notice
    07/11/2019 - Biometrics Appointment done
07/26/2019 - Called USCIS to place an EAD Expedite request
08/08/2019 - Requested Expedite through Congressman
08/09/2019 - Received Courtesy letter for missing i-693
08/23/2019 - New Card is being produced (I-765) [Day 75]

I had a social security (EAD) before I got married and it also said “valid for work only with DHS authorization” when I got married and changed my last name I had to reapply for a social security card. It was the same number except my last name change. With the EAD of application I-485 I didn’t reapply for a new one. I just gave my employer the new AED. Once I go to my interview and get approved I will reapply for a new social security card. Im not sure if my number would change (I doubt it) Im assuming it would be the same number just without “Valid for Work.....” I hope this helped you out!

The SSN never changes and stays with you for life, regardless of changes in your status. Even if you updated your status with the SSA now, your card will still say "valid for work only with DHS authorization", so you wouldn't get a new card and there isn't much point. After you become a permanent resident, you can update it with the SSA to get a card without that text. But even if you didn't update it and kept using the old card it wouldn't be a problem -- I know people who still have SS cards with the "valid for work only with DHS authorization" even after they've been citizens for many years, because they never bothered to go in to the SSA to update it.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Thank you so much for the information. And I still think the SSC will say “valid for work only with DHS authorization” when one gets a green-card, it's only removed when one is a citizen, as far as I know.

Off-topic question. How did you get your name changed? I want to change my name, but the information I found online is only for Citizens.

No. A Social Security card issued to a US citizen, national, permanent resident, asylee, or refugee will not have text that says "valid for work only with DHS authorization".
