  • What impacts processing time other than field office location?

Hello Everyone - I am new to this group and just filed for my AOS (married to USC) this month - my time line below in my signature. I understand, since I am from Houston my case will progress slower compared to other locations due to the backlog in my city.

My question is - what else impacts the processing times? The range for Houston I-485 processing times on USCIS website is 14 to 25.5 months. It is either 1 year or 2 years - this is huge to be able to plan life, visa status, job, relocation etc around. Just wondering if anyone out there can share what puts people in the lower and upper end of this processing time range?

My current visa status is L1B - have 1 more year before that expires. My company maybe able to extend that by a few months (for the time I spent outside US in the past 5 years). We filed joint tax return starting from 2018 tax year (when we got married). I have filed individual returns since 2015. I included all the evidence per suggestions on this forum on my concurrent filing. Is it now just a lottery whether my processing will take 1 or 2 years? Wish USCIS could give a bit more break down on processing times within I-485 - such as AOS category (IR1, EB1 etc), existing visa status (L1, H1B, K1, B1 etc) and other criteria.

Perhaps wishful thinking and anxiety on my end - even though it has hardly been a month Thanks to everyone in this forum for their inputs. And others in my category (L1B to IR-1 AOS or Houston based filers) please do share your timelines with me. Cheers.

The time is an estimate of time they will take to process the 50% of the cases received (the first date on the range) and 9x% (don't remember if it is 93%) of the cases.

Some people get the interview and approval before that first date because they don't approve the cases all at once (the 50%). They are just estimates and vary a lot.

You don't have to worry much about your L1B visa because your AOS is for marriage.

There are many unique variables for each case:
    - office load
    - officer load, efficiency, vacations, etc.
    - your documents, if they are complete, clear, enough evidence, translations if needed, I693 included or not, etc.
    - your background, background check, travel history, any arrests, tickets, etc.

    Good luck.
