My wife and I are getting ready to have our interview. We met online and are wondering if this is going to pose any issues.
My wife was on vacation in the United States and was here for approximately 4 months when I met her on the online dating site Bumble. She was planning to go back home to the Philippines until we fell in love and I asked her to marry me less than 3 months later when I couldn’t bare the thought of us not being together.
When she came here, she held a B1 tourist visa and we are adjusting status. In my opinion, there shouldn’t be any issue with us meeting online, since it’s completely normal for someone to date when they are on vacation. People use Tinder for “fun” on vacation all the time. I could, however, also see the immigration officer assuming that my wife had “intent” to marry while here on vacation if she was using an online dating site while in a foreign country.
Is this something that happens or is it completely acceptable for us to have met online while she was vacationing in the US? I know there are much more complex processes that apply to those that meet online while the wife is living abroad, then use a K1 visa to adjust status, but in our case I feel like it should be pretty straightforward.
My wife is pretty concerned about this and thinks that we should lie at our interview, coming up with a story about how we met at a bar. I think that it would be best if we stick to the truth, since we have absolutely nothing to hide and it could be very difficult to maintain consistency in a less honest version of our meeting. We’re hoping to get the opinion of some of you with experience in this matter. How are relationships that began on US online dating sites treated when the couple meets online while the immigrant is vacationing in the states?
