I actually had this same question so I asked my lawyer a few weeks ago. They said that most officers now don't stamp passports even if they approve on the spot, and that to get a stamp you usually have to make a separate appointment at a USCIS office and told me it wasn't worth going through that hassle unless you had an urgent reason to travel. In my personal opinion this seems quite plausible given that at this point I've read through a lot of interview experiences on this site and others over the past few months and I can remember only one where the IO stamped the passport. It probably comes down to each IO, so who knows...AOS EB-3 Employment Based

Hi - i am traveling soon and finally have my greencard in hand.
I was under the impression that as long as you have your permanent resident card in hand, you are free to travel and come back to the US? Can someone please verify if I need to get my passport stamped before leaving?
Thanks.

Yes, that is correct. The stamp is for when you don't have the card and need to prove that you are a permanent resident.

If you are approved on the spot, most likely your GC will arrive in a week. I guess, for most people, there is no need to get a stamp before they get the GC.Nov 2018 - Package sent - EB - Texas Service Center
Day 1 - Package received at the lockbox
Day 999 - Card delivered to me - Aug 2021
