  • Should I still take I-20 to dmv to make a California real ID card

    Hi everyone,
Im in California, and have a dmv appointment next week to change my driver license to a Real Id.
I remember last time when I renewed my driver license Id, I brought I-20 and I-94. However, now I’m Aos, what documents should I bring to prove my current Visa status? Do they accept I-485 receipt?

You should use your F1 status.

They'll still want your passport and I-94. Are you out of status? What adjustment did you apply for?

In Florida the DMV waited on the actual work permit and Green card before processing. They declined to process it with the receipt only. However, you can call in and ask. Otherwise, I usually travel with ALL of my immigrant documentations once I am going to do business with Social Security or DMV, chances are they might very well be needed and besides they do not take up much space in the vehicle.

        All the best.

You can only get a REAL ID driver's license if you have 1) an EAD, or 2) an unexpired US visa and valid I-94 (and I-20 if you are in F1 status). Are you still maintaining F1 status? Is your F1 visa still unexpired? If not, you would have to wait until you get an EAD to get a REAL ID driver's license. And even if you get one, it would expire at the end of the I-20 or EAD, so it might not be worth it. It might be simpler to continue using a non-REAL ID driver's license for now (they can still be used to board flights until October 2020, and you can use your passport or EAD to board flights after that), and change to a REAL ID driver's license after you get your green card.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

For real ID, DMV asked for my greencard, social security card, passport and latest bank statement or utility bill with my name on it.

What they do in Texas or Florida is 100% irrelevant to the poster trying to get a California license.

You can try. I got a real id using my ead and had to waif for a long time until I called the Legal Presence Unit for them to verify my id and next thing you know, they approved my background check and got my id in a week. Verifying the ead cards or greencards apparently takes forever if you dont call the Legal Presence Unit of DMV. But anyway, theres no harm in trying so just go try and see.

you still need to show your I-20 and i-94 to prove that you are maintaining your legal status.
