Hi everyone happy new year!,
Just a quick background.
My wife came to the states in November through a K1 visa, we married, and I filed the I-485 quickly in December. My friend went through the same process in 2016 and helped me with the K1 visa process without any hiccups. When it was time to file I-485 he advised me to file with my wife's maiden name because "it has to match the original visa documents" and that we change it later after we receive the green card. My wife just finished her biometrics in SF on Dec 30th but that's when we found out the sad news.
I spoke with the lady who did the biometrics but all she said was, "hopefully the person who's working on your case catches the name change on the marriage certificate." Thankfully, my wife's name on the marriage certification is the correct one we want with my surname. It's a bittersweet feeling honestly. Yes, it is still processing we're not denied. Yes its just a name and we're still married. But we were looking forward to move on to the next steps. Just wanted to see if there are any other couples who were/are in our position and still received the green card with the correct name or worst case we end up having to pay another fee for the name change later.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
