  • DL in Texas, unexpected renewal situation (personal experience)

Almost 6 years ago we started getting Texas DL. Almost every time my spouse had to wait for the second stage of verification, that means:
    • bring all paperwork to the driver license office
    • wait for them to scan everything and then be told to wait for a letter in the mail to come back once DHS verify the legal stay
Some times we get the license for just a few months, sometimes up to a year.

We started AOS in November 2018, at that time the principal renewed the license and they approved until the I94 valid date (2021) but the dependent renewed in January 2019. I guess they updated the information and the renewal was only authorized for 1 year (second stage).

Now the dependent received the letter that the license is going to expire and because they always take time, it is better to go 3-4 weeks before expiration.

In another post I reported that we sent the renewal (EAD) for the 3 of us, our child already approved for 2 years, principal for 1 year and dependent spouse still waiting. The EAD expires in March, so we were thinking that they will say to wait for second stage and the validity of the license will be for only 2 months or maybe 8 months (if they use the 180 days from the receipt).

We visited the office, give all the documents (they had to add the SS card that was not on file and the EAD that expires in March 2020). They didn't want the I-797 receipt for the renewal so we expected a license for only a few months.

To our surprise, the paper temporary license expires in March 2020 but it says that the real license will expire in 6 years. Everywhere I read it say that if there is no date for expiring legal stay the license will be for only 1 year and the legend "Limited Term" will be printed (all our licenses have showed the legend). That you can only get a 6 years license if you are a citizen or LPR. I wonder if the license will arrive with "Limited Term" or not.

Dependent still waiting for EAD renewal, we all waiting for our PD to become Current (EB).

    From this document:

If SAVE verifies you as a US citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, we will issue you a full-term (six-year) driver license or identification card. If SAVE verifies you as a nonimmigrant, we will issue you a limited term driver license or identification card with an expiration date that matches the end date of your lawful presence period provided by USCIS through SAVE.
We don't understand why the license is for 6 years. I guess that even if the license is for 6 years it should be a limited term driver license. I'll report back in a couple of weeks.

Anyone else in the same situation?

Can't speak for TX but in WA, I never had to bring anything else when I renewed my DLs and have done it like 4 times now. When I renewed it, all I did was go on their website, log into my account and request a new license.

Yes, each state is different and even some offices apply some different rules (or maybe they don't know the procedure).

In TX, USC can do several things online but others can't do those things and need to go to an office. I guess that's why you need to spend more than 2 hours each time you visit the DPS office.
