Do I have to remain on my f-1 status while I have a pending case with USCIS?

Hello,
I have a f-1 visa and I filed for adjustment of status 4 months ago through mariage. I am still going to school it’s just I don’t want to take 12 credit hours this semesters and if I don’t do so the school will drop my status. I just want to ask if it’s okay to not remain on the non-immigrant status while I am still waiting for my approval?

you do NOT have to stay in status but its always good to have a back up plan if your AOS went south.
