  • What Comes After Green Card?

    Hey everyone,

I'm having my Green Card interview (marriage based) on August 4th and I'm wondering what comes after that? Does the green card last 2 years and then I can apply for citizenship? Or what?

    Thanks! Any information is appreciated.

Well, after the green card, you need to stay in the US or show evidence of continuous stay in the US if you want to apply for Citizenship. I believe its 3 years. But as to whether the green card (GC) is for 10 years or a conditional GC, it depends on the number of years of marriage at the time of issue. If you've been married for more than 2 years, I believe you'd get the 10 years GC, otherwise, you get a conditional GC and when your marriage clocks the 2-year mark, you need to apply for removal of the conditions of the GC and then the 10 year GC would be given you.

I am not a lawyer and my mere suggestion doesn't construe legal counsel. All the best in your interview.

After your interview, the immigration officer can either approve, review, or deny your application. If it is approved you will be issued with either a 2 or 10-year green card, depending on how long you have been married. You can apply for citizenship once you have been a green card holder for 3 years and remain married to the same person.
