  • Lost original birth certificate

    1) My birth was registered but I lost the original birth certificate (I have a copy). What should I do?
    2) My birth certificate does not have my name, there are minor variations in both parents' names (including a typo). What should I do?

I had a similar situation to yours, where my original birth certificate was long lost. I did not even have a copy of it. Our attorney told us that an original birth certificate is a must have for a marriage based greencard application. Thankfully for us, my father was in West Bengal at the time of India's COVID lockdown, in the same municipal town where I was born. He was able to get an original birth certificate issued for me from the municipal office over 5 to 6 days by following due process (that involved multiple witnesses signing that I was indeed born in that town, etcetera).

Each Indian state seems to have a slightly different system of issuing birth certificates, but the general process is the same, and very streamlined.

If you have a close family member that can visit the municipality/town of your birth and get a new birth certificate issued, that would be the best way to go.
