Please help explain the purpose of Priority Date

Hello everyone!

I need help understanding the purpose of Priority Date. I'm on F1 -> F2B, and my priority date is May 14, 2015.
I just filed for AOS this March. Still haven't received biometric appointment letter.

On my receipt, it does says again that my priority date is May 14, 2015. What does it do? Does it mean anything for me? On the visa bulletin August 2018, they already passed by my priority date for F2B category https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...gust-2020.html

It means that there are Visas (GC) available for you this month.

If they approve your case this month, you can get a GC, if September 2020 Visa Bulletin changes the date to 13MAY15 or before, you need to wait until the date advance again so USCIS can issue you a GC.

Some people PD were current in June 2019, then the category retrogressed several years and as of August 2020, the PD is not current again. Not your category, so don't worry much about that example.
