  • Update SS card or not?

    Hello,

We are under impression that it is not necessary to got to SSA to remove "Valid for work only with DHS authorization". Especially now when SSA does not take any appointments. We will simply do this after naturalization. After all, name and number still the same, and we can provide GC to employer if needed.

    Please provide feedback.

    Thank you.

From what I read, you are not required to change it.

If/when you became a citizen then it is important to update your information and at that point, you can change your SSN card.

I read that the 3 important things after became US citizen are:
    - passport
    - update your status at SS office and get a new SS card if it is not already one without restrictions.
Nov 2018 - Package sent - EB - Texas Service Center
Day 1 - Package received at the lockbox
Day 999 - Card delivered to me - Aug 2021

All my posts are based on my experience or information I read on the forums or the USCIS website. I may be wrong. Please consult a professional.

Some people still have that text on their SS card years after naturalization; it doesn't really cause any problems unless you use certain SS disability programs.

On the other hand, getting the restriction text removed has the advantage that it allows the SS card to be used as a List C document for the I-9, so you can start a new job without ever showing a GC to the employer.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
