You can travel. One of 2 scenarios may happen:

      1. H1-B stamp is valid. Make sure that when you re-enter, you provide your current H1-B document and stamp, and not the EAD. If one re-enters using H1-B, their status will remain unchanged.
      2. H1-B stamp is not valid/ do not have another visa to enter. If one enters using EAD, one will forego the H1B status. In this case if their I-485 is denied, they lose EAD and AP validity with it. If I-485 is denied while one is traveling internationally, and they do not have H1-B, then they cannot re-enter US since the AP is no longer valid due to AOS denial.

Please don't consider this as legal advice, just a general idea to get you started on the understanding.

      • I actually have a valid L1A visa, but since this was awarded while I was in the US, I don’t have the stamp in my passport. That would have required a trip to the UK and COVID restrictions meant that I would never have been able to come back, visa or not. I would need to return to the UK, schedule an appointment at the US embassy, get the visa stamp in my passport etc but then be stuck because UK people were not allowed to travel to the US

as such, I do have a valid visa (and the documents to prove it) just not in my passport.

The L1A was done because we recognized that the EAD wouldn’t be received in time as part of my EB1-C application and I was already employed in the US (under a different visa that was due to expire) So I have my L1A while the AOS (EB1-C category) application is in progress.
