  • Is it must to apply I-765 for parents

    Hi All,

I am applying GC for my parents, they are already 65+ and don't want to work in US. I want to ask If it is compulsory or optional to file form I-765 i.e. Work Authorization.

    Thank you!

It is optional. However, it is free, so why not? Getting an EAD will allow them to get an SSN and get a driver's license or state ID in all states, and serve as an alternative ID for boarding flights after October 1, 2021 if they don't want to carry their passport. Getting an SSN will qualify them for the stimulus tax credits next year, and other things. (Getting a green card will also get them an SSN and driver's license/ID, but the timeline for EADs is in many cases shorter and more predictable than the timeline for I-485.)

I would recommend also applying for Advance Parole (which is also free), to have the flexibility to travel abroad if something unexpected happens.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Agree with newacct, sending I-765 too, in most cases, will give them SSN way before the GC is approved. Besides what newacct mentioned, is easier to get a checking account, credit card, medical insurance, even rent an apartment, etc.

There are some credit cards that allow additional users without asking for SSN, you can add them to your credit cards if you have one that allows that (Chase for example). When they get their SSN you can add them to other cards, this will help them get a score.
