Can I go abroad without my wife for a long period of time?

Hi there,

I got my green card through marriage after marrying my wife 7 months ago, what means it is a temporary one, I will not get my final one until next year.
We are currently living in USA. However, my mother was diagnosted with cancer last month and I have decided to go to Europe to be with her during her treatment, which is going to last several months. My wife is planning to stay in the U.S.
My question is, would it be a problem? depending on what happens I may stay in Europe for longer than a year.

Your absence for a long period from US will definitely create problems or complications.

Why is that? I was told that I can be outside The U.S for less than a year but not over it...
What type of problems or compliations would I have?

You are not supposed to stay abroad longer than 6 months each trip. You have to apply for extension if you have to be absent more than 6 months. I don't know where I saw an official document about this, but you can definitely google "how to maintain status as a permanent resident."
