Can you apply for B2 visa extension while I-485 is pending Notice of Receipt?

Hi,

I sent in my parents' I-485 and it was delivered to USCIS Chicago Lockbox 11/9/2021 and signed for by J. CHYBA. Does anyone know if they can remain in the US while still waiting for the Notice of Receipt for the I-485? Their visa expires on 1/15/2022 and I'm just concerned that the processing will go beyond that date. Thanks very much for any answers/direction anyone could give.

Answer: Since you have filed the petition before current status expires, Applicant is good to stay in the USA with the help of pending Adjustment of status petition. Normally, receipt will take 2 to 4 weeks. If you will not receive during these period, you can raise a service request or contact USCIS about the status of receipt notice.
And also, If you want to extend your current status, Yes of course you can do. Please make sure to file the extension petition, before current non immigrant status expires.

They can stay in the US for as long as their I-485 is pending. They should NOT apply for B2 extension of stay, as that would require them to falsely claim that they plan to leave.
