  • Job change - Post GC - less than 6 months

    Hi,

I need help with below queries, appreciate if someone can provide me some insight/suggestions on the same.
    1) I got my GC in Nov, 2021 - can I switch company now or should I wait for 6 months to complete? please note I had been in current company for the past 8 years.
    2) The new job is good position but not sure if I will fit into the org, can I have two FTE jobs at the same time since I am no longer visa dependent ? any concerns/issues since everything is
remote I can manage both the jobs ?
    3) This is planned for short term - 3-4 months of working in 2 jobs (till 6 months on GC with current company is complete) then completely move to new job once I feel comfortable
    with the new position/job
    4) I was told we are not supposed to work in 2 FTE jobs since both employers will report SSN, Medicare taxes on our SSN to govt, which might raise a flag or concern for me
in future either with GC renewal or Citizenship.

Appreciate if someone can suggest on the above queries.

    Thanks in advance.

From what I understand the 180 days after receiving the GC is a recommendation but not an obligation. You are allowed to change jobs 180 days after filing the I-485 but there is no requirement to do that after you get your GC (if filed more than 180 days before).

About having 2 full-time jobs, there can be limits on your contract. As long as your contract does not limit you to work and you do the work, pay taxes, etc. you should not have problems. If you are not going to work around 80 hours a week, then it may cause problems.

This is just my point of view. I have no experience here. Just trying to help and keep the conversation going.

      Hi Member,
Here is my view on your questions.
      1) I got my GC in Nov, 2021 - can I switch company now or should I wait for 6 months to complete? please note I had been in current company for the past 8 years.
Answer: Yes. As a green card holder, you are good to work with any Employer. But what my concern is, if you move immediately then it may show bad faith.
      2) The new job is good position but not sure if I will fit into the org, can I have two FTE jobs at the same time since I am no longer visa dependent ? any concerns/issues since everything is
remote I can manage both the jobs ?
Answer: As other Senior member mentioned, It depend on your Employment contract. But as a Green card holder, you can perform two jobs.
      3) This is planned for short term - 3-4 months of working in 2 jobs (till 6 months on GC with current company is complete) then completely move to new job once I feel comfortable
      with the new position/job
Answer: Again as I mentioned, Please make sure you have no clauses to perform two jobs on Employment agreement with concern Employers.
      4) I was told we are not supposed to work in 2 FTE jobs since both employers will report SSN, Medicare taxes on our SSN to govt, which might raise a flag or concern for me
in future either with GC renewal or Citizenship.\
Answer: I dont think so, it will affect your future immigrant status. What my argument is, you will be properly paying taxes notifying government and follow other immigration rules. If so, you need not to worry.
      All the best.
      Thanks

Thank you for sharing. This information helps change a job. I was thinking about changing my job multiple times, but I always thought it was a wrong decision. After I decided I wrote a short notice resignation letter, to let a good impression about me. The hardest thing was to get used to the new collective at the new job. The collective on my last job was very great and always helping each other, but I was already tired of that office routine and had to take a step to change my life and make it better.

Changing jobs is not always a good option. Who knows how you will cope and whether you will even like the new place. When you want some kind of change, it is better to start doing it gradually. You can start by taking qualification courses to raise your level. I signed up for a courier refresher course at this website
https://serviceclub.com/. This international campaign allows you to improve and visit other countries on a working visit. This kind of work is both lucrative and interesting in its possibilities. You can try to do it too.
