My husban was brought to the US when he was 4 he is now 20 he has not left since then he went to school here in the US. He came on visa. I am a US citizen. We have been married for almost 2 years now and we have an 18 month old. We are getting ready to send in his paper work. I would like to save us some money by doing it ourselfs. I just want to know of anyone who had the same situation. What did you do? Is it possible to do it without a lawyer? He has no criminal record or anything. Please help.

He can apply for adjustment if:
You are a USC,
He can show that he made a lawful entry (check for his passport for a visa and I-94), and
He is otherwise admissible as an immigrant.
Assuming he is NOW out of status, he cannot leave until after getting LPR status (a greencard) OR ELSE he will activate the unlawful presence bar to re-entry for 10 years.
You file an I-130 along with
His I-485 and I-765
DO NOT file I-131 (it would be denied anyway UNLESS he is in current lawful status--doubtful after 16 years)
You will have to file an I-864 and meet the income requirements of I-864P either on your own or with co-sponsor(s). Hubby does not count for that UNLESS he has authorized work or is independently wealthy and meets the requirements of I-864W.
You can get cheap or free legal help from many sources (like a local law school or legal aid clinic or community organization)
SEE: for reputable organizations that have sought approval from the immigration authorities.
They also keep and post a list of disciplined practitioners to steer clear of.

Need an attorney
I had my interview on 11/17. I used a lawyer and payed about 2500 just for the attorney. He made the process very easy and less nerve wrecking. All in all I spent about 5 grand so far. The interviewer said that he will approve my case. He requested so much information in the begining of the process that the interviewer said that I had everything he needed and the interview took only 5 minuets. That being said, I would reccommend a lawyer. Let me know if you need a referral.
