Does working without athorization preclude AOS?

Hi, I worked illegally for a few months while waiting for my H1 to come through and can not find out what the implication of this is for AOS - within the States.

It seems the rules require you to be "in status" at all times, and technically I was because I always had a valid I-94.

Anyone know the ins and outs of this?
