Hi All,

I am on L1 and my wife is on L2 visa. And I got my I140 approved and my company is going to file I485 next week for me and my wife. But I don't have marriage certificate and I cannot travel to India at present because of personal reasons.

1. Is there any alternative for marriage certificate?
2. If we need marriage certificate, can I ask my employer to file I485 only for me for now. I want to file it for my wife when we can get the marriage certificate. If I can do it, what is the legal status of my wife after I got my GC?

Can you not write and get marriage certificate sent to you?
There is no alternative for marriage certificate.
It would depend on how long your wife's L2 is valid for. As long as it has not expired but if you file just for you then when you get your GC you can file AOS for her.

You should be able to by writing to whatever official office you have back in your country and send evidence of who you are and pay the fee for it . We have Births Deaths and Marriages in Australia, so you must have something like that go to web site and look up information for getting your marriage certificate and filling in form
