  • Federal tax return transcript

    Hi,

I'm a US citizen + holding another nationality. I have a fully sponsored scholarship from the other country. So, I'm not employed and never employed in the past.

I'm preparing the form I-864 Affidavit of support to petition for my husband (F1 VISA holder) for adjustment of status in order to become a permanent resident. I have enough income from the scholarship to sponsor my husband.

Q-Do I need to request Federal tax return transcript, although I never paid tax? What should I do?

Did you file a return? If so it is good to attach the transcript and write a cover letter explaining the scholarship being exempt from taxes.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

Can you get a transcript if you had never pay or file taxes? I don't think so, but check with IRS to make sure!!! What should you do?To answer this: Consult an immigration lawyer because you don't want to mess up the first step in this immigration process. " Wrong help can hurt you."
I wish you all the best!

A transcript is a copy of IRS records of the tax return you filed. If you didn't file, there is no transcript.

Scholarships count as income to report. Some of it is tax free like what you spend on books and tuition. If you get enough to cover room, board, travel, research that part is taxable. Better study up on tax laws and see if you were required to file.
