I am in US on J1 visa which expires in Dec 2011. I am studying for masters in computer science. I found employer who is willing to sponsor me for a visa but they don't want to pay for lawyer. What forms do I need to file and how do I need to proceed with the adjustment of status? I was thinking to apply for H1B but what forms do I need and how long does that process take? THank you for any advise you can give me.

What AOS you talking about?
Do you mean applying for H1B?
It takes somewhere between one and three months. Also you need your diploma evaluation if you don't have your masters from US university yet.
H1B applications closed for this year, but if quota was not exhausted you maybe still can apply.
Lawyer will certainly have more knowledge about all of this.
