  • Advice needed for I-485 interview & SSN probs

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post but I have been reading the forum as a guide through my immigration process with many months. Thanks everyone for your helpful input.

I entered the US on a K1 visa, married my fiance within the 90 days, and filed my adjustment of status paperwork last week. All that has been going fine so far but I am a little concerned about the green card interview process.

I foolishly did not apply for my SSN when I came to the US and now my I-94 has expired which I am led to believe means I cannot apply for my SSN. I'd be happy if anyone could prove me wrong on that note though

I'm in no rush for the SSN but I understand that at the interview I will be asked for proof that my marriage is bona fide. I'm not sure what evidence I can provide as I cannot open a joint bank account without a SSN, nor can I be a co-signer on a lease agreement without a SSN.

Can anyone advise me what evidence I can bring to the interview? I mean I can bring tons of pictures and trip itineraries etc but I get the feeling they will be looking for something more substantial. Has anyone been in a similar position?

Did you applied for EAD too? Cos if you did, wait till you receive your EAD then you can now apply for the SSN regardless if your I-94 is expired.

      SSN and Card

Hello...my wife arrived in the USA from Russia on 22-Dec on a K-1 VISA. The DHS paperwork said that DHS will provide the SSA with my wife's information in order to produce a SSN and card. If my memory is correct, look at Form DS-230, and there should be a question about the issuance of a SSN and card. If you checked YES that you would like DHS to provide the SSA with your information, then what I would do is take that form down to the SSA and plead your case and apply for a SSN and Card. My wife received her card only because I did the very same thing...I showed them my initial efforts and the clerk completed the necessary information on the system. I hope this helps.

@pinaypie15 - yes I applied for EAD at the same time so I might need to wait until that is processed.

@glbsrmba - I remember seeing that on the DS-230 form and I did check the box saying that I wanted them to process my SSN. However I read somewhere that only applies to immigrant visas. Since the K1 is technically classed as a non-immigrant then apparently they won't issue me with a SSN. I've been in the US for 3 months now and not had anything from the social security office. I'll try going down there and see what happens...not too confident though.

        Thanks for your help guys.
